Types of seaweed
Toine told us all about the diversity and possibilities of seaweed. There are an estimated 10,000 different types of seaweed worldwide, with approximately 650 different types identified in the North Sea alone. These include the most common types such as bladderwrack, sea lettuce, and various other brown, red, and green algae.
Seaweed is packed with essential nutrients important for various bodily functions, including bone health, thyroid function, and the immune system. Additionally, seaweed is rich in iodine, contains plenty of antioxidants, and is a good source of dietary fiber.
This trip is right up our alley! With our Zero Waste mission, we're always on the lookout for innovative packaging solutions. Using seaweed as portion packaging comes with various benefits for the environment and our well-being, and it has the potential to reduce plastic pollution. We just had to dive deeper into this
Let's Taste It
You can imagine that after all that information, we were hungry. Toine was prepared for this. The team was divided into groups and got to work creating real appetizers, all incorporating seaweed, of course. We made sushi, stuffed dates, and crackers. The seaweed added a savory and deep flavor to the dishes, creating a true umami explosion.
Filled with new knowledge and satisfied stomachs, we headed back to the office. Thanks, Toine, for this educational and delicious day.
